Woodstock is an artists' colony in the Catskill Park with galleries, music, shops and restaurants that rise and fall with the visitor calendar.
Apply Now →The Town of Woodstock is in northern Ulster County, northwest of Kingston, inside the Catskill Park. The 2020 census counted 6,287 residents in the town and 2,521 in the Woodstock census-designated place at its center. The town has been an artists' colony since the early twentieth century, when the Byrdcliffe Colony arrived in 1902 and the Maverick Art Colony followed. The Maverick music festival, founded by Hervey White in 1916, is described as the longest-running summer chamber music festival in the country. The Woodstock Guild runs the oldest craft shop in Woodstock, the Fleur de Lis Gallery. The famous 1969 festival, incidentally, was held almost 60 miles away in Bethel.
| Business | What sells | The cash challenge |
|---|---|---|
| Galleries and craft shops | Art, objects, gifts | Inventory and consignment timing; one slow weekend can matter |
| Restaurants and cafes | Meals for residents and visitors | Staffing for peak weekends, quiet weekdays |
| Lodging and short-stay hosts | Rooms and experiences | Maintenance and upgrades before the season |
| Music, performance and event spaces | Tickets and bookings | Costs before the show, receipts after |
| Local trades | Repairs and renovations | Materials before payment |
Visitors come for the art, the music, the mountains and the town's long reputation, and they do not arrive evenly. Weekends outweigh weekdays, good weather outweighs bad, and fall color and summer events outweigh the quiet of late winter. A business in this calendar earns most of its income in some months and carries all of its fixed costs in all of them.
For illustration only, with round numbers that are not our terms: if a small inn or shop earns most of its annual revenue in eight months and has to cover rent, insurance, utilities and a skeleton crew through the other four, the question is how to bridge the lean stretch without cutting the things that make the business worth visiting. Owners often use working capital to refresh stock, fix the property or add a new offering during the quiet months so the business is ready when the season returns.
We fund $25,000 to $5,000,000, funded in as little as 24 hours. FICO 500+ is considered. We typically review about three months of business bank statements, require no tax returns, and use a soft credit pull on an application of about five minutes. Sole proprietors can apply, which is a good match for a town of independent artists, makers and small operators. Start on the application page, or read about Ulster County and the Mid-Hudson region.
The 2026 minimum wage outside New York City, Long Island and Westchester is $16 an hour.
Independent artists and craftspeople are often sole proprietors with irregular income, and some are wary of financing for that reason. A working-capital decision for a maker looks the same as for any other small business: what does the money buy, when does it pay back, and what happens if the purchase is delayed? A kiln, a press, a workshop upgrade or a booth at a major show are examples of purchases that can open new income but need money first.
