Apply Now →Salisbury is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, with 12,618 residents at the 2020 census. It was formerly known as South Westbury, because it lies directly south of Westbury. The modern name comes from the Hempstead Plains: late-19th-century Long Islanders thought the broad, flat land resembled Salisbury Plain in England, and the name became official for the 1990 census. The CDP covers about 1.7 square miles, and many Levitt-style homes sit next to Eisenhower Park, which was formerly called Salisbury Park.
Salisbury is served by the Westbury station of the Long Island Rail Road and shares fire districts with Westbury and East Meadow. In practice, that means customers do not stop at the hamlet boundary. People shop, eat and use services across all three, and a business based in Salisbury often has a customer base that is really a three-community patchwork.
For an owner, a patchwork customer base is stable in one way, because you are not dependent on one small population, and demanding in another, because customers have plenty of nearby alternatives.
A neighborhood of mid-century homes produces steady demand for repair and renovation work. That is good for contractors, and it also means their work is project-shaped: quote, buy materials, do the work, bill, wait. A contractor with several jobs in progress can have a large amount of cash tied up in materials and labor at once, even though every job is profitable.
For illustration only: three jobs at $9,000 in costs each means $27,000 of work in progress before any final invoice is paid. Not our terms, not a typical outcome.
Eisenhower Park is next door and the Westbury train station serves the hamlet, so people pass through the area regularly on the way to somewhere else. A coffee counter, deli, convenience store or quick-service restaurant near a major route sees that movement, and its sales depend on how many people come by on a given day. Weather, events and road work all change that. A business that relies on passing traffic needs more room to absorb a slow week than one that relies on appointments, and working capital is one way to create it.
