The two limits on a shop

A shop's capacity is limited by bays and by technicians. Buying a lift when you lack a technician to use it, or hiring when you lack space, solves nothing. Many owners find that diagnostic equipment, which lets one technician do a harder job faster, gives a better return than more floor space. Look at where cars wait longest, and buy against that bottleneck.

Payback in round numbers

For illustration only, with invented numbers: an alignment system costs $30,000 and adds ten alignments a week at $100 each, with $30 in direct costs per job. That adds about $700 a week, or roughly $3,000 a month, before anything else. Payback takes about ten months if demand holds. If the shop would only add four alignments a week, it takes much longer. Testing the lower number is the safer approach. This is not our terms or a typical result.

New, used or leased

  • Used equipment is cheaper, but check condition, safety certifications and parts availability.
  • New equipment comes with a warranty and, usually, training and support.
  • Whichever you pick, include installation, floor or electrical work and training in the total cost.

Check the numbers after you buy

Three months after installing new equipment, compare actual jobs and revenue with your original estimate. If it is working, consider whether the next bottleneck is worth fixing. If it is not, find out why, whether it is marketing, staffing, training or pricing, before spending more. Treat each purchase as a test and keep the records.

Ask technicians what they need

The people using the equipment often know which tool costs the shop the most time. Ask them which job they most often decline or hand to a competitor, and which tool would let them finish jobs faster. Their answers frequently point to a better purchase than the one on your list.
